05-July Chute Montmorency

Dirk Gently Rules

Combining yesterday's failed wanderings, predictions of 90+ degree heat and knowing we had to pack the bikes before the end of day, we bailed on the idea of doing the 70 mile tour of the Ile d'Orleans.  Instead, we would head up the coast, visit the Montmorency Waterfalls and continue north with the goal of a simple 30 mile ride.  This turned out to be a good decision as the weather was as hot as they said and the bike trail off-ramp that would have taken us to the Ile was closed due to construction -- if rain was the theme for the road to Quebec City; road construction was the theme for riding in Quebec City.

So we set off north following our bestest attempt at Dirk Gently navigation:

... A few turnings later and I was thoroughly lost. There is a school of thought which says that you should consult a map on these occasions, but to such people I merely say, 'Ha! What if you have no map to consult? What if you have a map but it's of the Dordogne?' My own strategy is to find a car, or the nearest equivalent, which looks as if it knows where it is going and follow it. I rarely end up where I was intending to go, but often I end up somewhere that I needed to be.

Starting early, we followed commuters out of town and returned to town following tourists.  Compared to yesterday, it was a completely stress-free ride to end the trip.

Lunch was at Restaurant SSS and dinner at Toast.  Both were nouvelle cuisine and offered the vegetarian foodie an interesting and extraordinary meal.  It was only later that we learned that the restaurants shared the same owner and chef.  Don't let the website sample menus dissuade you; both restaurants now strive to always have a vegetarian option on the menu.
