Isn't it obvious? Edwina is that lovely yellow bike. Unlike her owners, she loves to pose for pictures and has taught her green-painted cousin to do the same.
What? Bikes don't have names? Bikes don't have personalities? Hrrrmph....if you feel that way, clearly you don't ride. Bikes have personality and some even have names. In Edwina's case, her personality started long before she left the Waterford plant. By design, Edwina would be built with S&S couplers. A full-sized bike, when disassembled, she can pack into a airline legal 26x26x10 suitcase.
But the name? OK. Perhaps you recall the classic movie, All of Me with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. Lily Tomlin's character, Edwina, is a bit of spoiled prima dona. Upon her death her soul is to be transferred to a bowl and then to a younger host. Comedy ensues when Edwina's soul enters Steve Martin's character. The comedy is punctuated by Richard Libertini's character running around with the bowl chanting, "Put Edwina back in bowl...back in bowl..."
What better parallel for a bike designed to fit into a box, than Edwina, as in "Put Edwina back in box....back in box..." Seemed logical and cute at the time. Little did we know that Edwina would live up to her name in other ways.
Oh, yes, she is a bit of a prima dona. A beautiful bike, the decision to paint her pale yellow with silver script did result in a gorgeous work of art. However, to keep her looking respectable she must be wiped down and polished after every dusty or rainy encounter or she takes on a dingy appearance. Never has a bike required quite so much TLC.
And as for the comedy side? With several winter months between order and her first trip we all thought this would be a slam dunk. Nope. The S&S couplers required changes to the original frame dimensions (her owner is a bit oddly shaped), her odd size required special manufacturing, and then, true to her name sake, she got waylaid on the 20 mile trip from Waterford to Waukesha adding more days to her delivery. She was finished and assembled just one week before her first plane trip.
But, like a good movie, there is a happy ending. Edwina has come around and is a wonderful bike with a smooth ride. Not quirky. No longer getting lost on the way to her destination, she is a happy, reliable steed.
What about the green bike? Does it have a name?
Nope. For some bikes, the name just isn't obvious. At times it has been referred to as Edwin, but that name is just too simple for a classicly painted British Racing Green Waterford. Really, when you see Sean Connery in a tux, does the name Edwin come to mind? Heck no. This bike is just too refined for the name Edwin.
So, for now, it is just referred to as "the green bike" or just "Green" until its name emerges.
